It was almost noon by the time Cassie and the others pried themselves from their beds. It was amazing how quickly she had gotten used to sleeping next to Jason. In fact, she had found out he was the reason why everyone knew she was missing. Heâd woken up a few minutes after she left and realized sheâd snuck out. A warm feeling flooded her chest whenever she thought of him. She couldnât wait to go home and figure out what came next.
With plenty of caffeine running through their systems, the four of them piled into Jasonâs rental, ready to tackle what was left of the day. Cassie mustâve spent her sleeping hours thinking about their problem at hand because when she woke up, sheâd realized their next step: Talk to Natashaâs friend Ginny, the one Harris had already interviewed on behalf of Detective Green.
Harris hadnât loved the idea of talking to Greenâs witness without him around, but sheâd seen the determination in Cassieâs eyes. They all realized how close they were getting to real answers. This was not the time to fight amongst themselves. If they were going to take Aguilar down, they had to stand as a unit.
Jason drove them to the small café where Ginny worked. She had just walked out the door, ready to grab something to eat on her lunch break, when Harris approached her. Ginny seemed just as nervous as Harris had said sheâd been that first day she met her. Cassie hung back and waited for Harris to introduce her while Jason and Laura went inside to get some more coffee. The pair of them had agreed to hang back until they were needed.
After about a minute, Harris motioned for Cassie to join them. Ginny was looking at her with apprehension, her lips pressed firmly in a straight line. She had a severe bob of jet-black hair, cut to just below her ears. It was hard to tell under the heavy makeup that was a few shades too dark for her pale skin, but Ginny looked younger than Cassie thought sheâd be. Maybe early twenties. A pang of heartbreak shot through Cassieâs chest. This girl was just a kid, but sheâd seen so much. And she was possibly the only person who could help them find Natasha.
Cassie smiled, going for somewhere between shy and friendly. The last thing she wanted to do was spook the woman. âHello,â she said, giving a polite wave. That morning, sheâd realized her wound from the night before had healed, and she was glad she was no longer wearing the wrap Jason had tied to her wrist. âThanks for talking to us.â
âI donât have much time.â Ginnyâs voice was curt, but not rude. âI only get a half hour.â
âWeâll be quick, I promise.â Harris motioned to an empty table where all three of them sat down. âI just want to follow up with you on Norma.â
Ginny looked like she was ready to bolt at any second, but she stayed in her chair.
